iPod shuffle

Yesterday (26.12.), I ordered a new iPod from Apples online store. It’s an iPod shuffle with 512 MB flash based memory. I wanted a replacement for my 3rd generation iPod that I have hooked up permanently to my hifi set. The shuffle is only 22 grams heavy and it is flash based, so it is perfect for running, which I’m going to use it for. Apple has promised delivery within the next few days, so I’ll give a small review when it arrives.

Update 31.12.2005
Yesterday evening, TNT rang my door with my new iPod. The shipment took 5 working days, but I slowed the process by 2 days because I gave the wrong shipment address :-(
As usual, with goods from Apple, the packaging is unique in its design. You can’t help to get impressed by the manual that follows the iPod Shuffle. It is one page in credit card size!
During the night I have charged the battery, so now I’m looking forward to test the thing…

Update 11.01.2006
I have now been testing the Shuffle for 12 days (mostly with Robbie Williams’ new album, Röyksopp’s `The Understanding,’ and a lot of podcasts) and here is a summary:

Pro
+ The size and weight is really amazing. It is the same size as a pack of gum and weighs only 22 grams. It fits in the pocket of a pair of thigh jeans; your only worry is not to bend the head phone jack. Also the lanyard, which is a neck strap, is really cleaver for exercise.
+ Battery life. I charged it when I got it and yesterday was the first time I recharged it! It fantastic.
+ Ideal tool for podcasts. It’s easy to drag the new podcast’s from iTunes to the Shuffle, so now I’m listening to podcasts a bit more that I used to do.
+ It is easy to upload music to. Just press `Autofill’ and the Mac chooses 512 MB of songs randomly (or according to your preferences). It takes about 5 minutes via the fast USB 2 connection.

Con
- It does not play Apple Lossless format files (i.e. high-fidelity music files with bitrates around 8-900 kbps). This is a bit annoying because some of my cds are ripped in this format. iTunes automatically converts the Lossless files to 128 kbps AAC files, but the conversion is quite slow on my 933 MHz iBook G4.
- The power indicator is not too accurate.
- It was a bit cubersome to operate the first few days, but now I seem to have figured it out.
- The sound quality is not much above average (whatever that is). I’ll try to make a comparison sometime…

Is Santa a deadweight loss?

Is the seasons present-exchange worth the effort? Or is the associated deadweight loss from present-giving “too big”?

In short: When you buy a present that cost 100 euro, what do you think the reciever would have been willing to pay for that present? 80, 100 or 120 euros? That is the essence of Santa’s deadweight loss.

Indeed, economics is the dismal science :-)

Effect of Unemployment on Mortality

Under the University Projects link, you will now find the final version of my project in a course I have attended during the fall.

The dataset was a 10 percent random sample of the labour force between 20 and 64 years of age in the counties of Århus, Viborg, Ringkøbing and Nordjylland (some 85,000 persons). Unemployment status in week 48 of 1990 is recorded and other variables like sex, income, marrital status, children, education etc. are controlled for. Mortality is recorded until 31 December 2002.

I have found that the reletive risk (RR) of mortality for an unemployed is 1.75; i.e. that a person who has been unemployed faces a 75 percent higher risk of being dead at the end of the follow-up compared to an employed person with the same characteristics.

Derfor sidder jeg her.

I want one!
