No, neither am I. The first thing a researcher would control for is probably body-weight, which would rule out my hypothesis. But body-fat might not be the relevant factor. Perhaps fat and muscles have different characteristics when it comes to absorbing anaesthesia.

The anaesthesia thing has been debated but there seems to be a certain amount of evidence backing it up (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8195177.stm). I'm not sure about the Viking hypothesis though!

This is scary, but why not in Copenhagen as well as New York or Bogota? Norwegian reports state that the Central American gangs are imported to Norway now which will heat the drug battle in a manner only dreamed about ten years ago. Globalization....

Comment on On last-minute bidding by fakename

This happens for several reasons:
(1) To evaluate how much to pay one must know what the market demands (so wait and see what people bid up to)
(2) People involved in auctions are not perfectly rational (get caught up in a bidding war, even when there's the same item for less a few listings down)
(3) Other people put higher reserve prices when they see activity on an auction, driving up the market price
(4) People are using automated tools to do this for them "auction snipers" which are effectively doing what you're saying, just at the last second

SO with (1) you deny others knowledge about the market, with (2) you avoid driving other people's unrational behavior, with (3) you give the impression of less interest and therefore misrepresent the market. In the last minute of the auction, assuming no snipers are involved, all of the naive bidders have placed their bids and the in-the-know bidders are using the information provided by them to judge what they need to pay to win. There is still the problem of two in-the-know bidders having a bidding war in the last minute, but it's unlikely that they'll drive up the price as high as an extended bidding war would due to the presence of fewer bidders.

In the case of snipers, you may as well have a closed bidding system, where everyone can bid for a set period of time, by placing their bids in a locked box, which will then be opened at a set time. This is worse, though, from a seller's point of view since they benefit from the public driving-up of prices.

The market fails to internalise the true costs of resources, which are therefore not included in prices. That creates a wedge, where a rising super power, like China, can use its own land as a land fill to dump the waste of an extremely inefficient (from a resource point of view) plastic producing economy. The gain is off course world domination, which is well worth the present value of present and future pollution. This is off course only the case in the stage of development when the value of human life is still low. When they grow a real middle class, the political preferences will change rapidly towards better living conditions - but that can be offset by appealing to nationalism and patriotism like in the US (which is why they will probably need an external enemy at some point :-). Is this story too far fetched?

Hi Geir, don't know if you are being ironic - but I know I was... Amsterdam is FANTASTIC :-)

I'm only half-way through the Palin-box, but the best I've seen so far is the Hemingway trip. Full Circle is also nice (I'm only half way thourgh, but I especially like the beginning where he visits eastern Russia - Gulag and Kamchatskiy). Around the world in 80 days, was a bit, ehm, fast... And Great Railway was very, very, 70ish, but still nice.

Have not seen Pole to Pole yet, but will look forward to that :)

ps. in the Hemingway Adventure I especially liked the look of Palins face when a woman in a grocery store (without knowledege of Palins past) mentions 'spam'

Reading the whole article it didn't seem that bad after all. But one should always be careful with humor crossing cultural borders.
